Memorizing vs Living

We have all been taught in our past to memorize some sort of credo. It may have been the Scout Law or the pledge of allegiance, or even your company mission statement. Memorization is pretty easy, living the pledge, law or mission statement is another thing. We need to remember the purpose of memorization in the first place. Most of the time it is that we create a habit that will make us a better people. Let's take the Pledge of Allegiance most citizens of the United State learn in elementary school. You know it. Let's all say it:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

When you really think about the words, and what you should be doing to actually keep the pledge, this statement becomes a powerful motivator to obey laws and serve others. It gives you a sense of union with your fellow citizen.

Now take a look at your Company or Personal Mission Statement. Are you following this mission statement? One of my favorite consultant jobs is to help get a company back on track with their financial goals. The first thing I look at is their mission statement. As I interview the management team I ask them what they did that week in conjunction with the company mission statement. The blank stares would fill a museum. I know I can get results when management is willing to take the mission statement seriously.

So next time you see the Flag, or a Boy Scout or you Mission Statement ask your self what have I done that shows I am following the pledge, law or mission.
