Sometimes You Shouldn't Stand Out

In 1985 I was part of the largest dance performance at the time. 5000 dancers came together at the Rose Bowl to perform. Most performances involved 500 or more dancers on the field. The finale had all 5000 dancers come out onto the field. I remember running into people during practice as I ran on to the field with my partner, now my wife. The kicks, turns and moves had to be precise and in syncronization with the rest of the crew. There was no room for anyone to do their own moves to attempt to stand out.

There are occasions in business when this is true as well. All parts of your marketing plan are one of these examples. To truely get results all entities need to work in synergy with the others. No room for showboating, something that is really hard for me at times, because I really like to stand out. My secret is to be one with the team. When I take on a new client I get in trenched with the CEO or board to learn their vision. I get to know the employees to see where they best fit in. I become the agent of that company. I admit it has lead to a lot of confusion as to who I really work for, but the results speak for themselves.

There are many books and websites about synergy, my favorite is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. My greatest advice is to let everyone know their job and hold them accountable. Take the blame when things dont work. You are the dance director and need to correct the showboaters right away.
