Do I Direct Message or Open Reply

A few shows ago we got into a discussion about certain popular people on twitter who will Direct Message (DM) you rather than an open reply. The question is why? It seems sort of like the 80's movie "The Breakfast Club" where the youth had all created a bond because of their situation but it was pointed out that the jock and popular girl would not acknowledge they knew the others on Monday because it would hurt their rep. On the other hand are they trying to protect us from getting too many followers too quickly and maybe some who would not be as engaged. Who really knows. My personal policy is the more open replies I give the more my name is out there and for a marketing person that is the goal. I use DM only when the message is truly private or when someone DMs me first in which I figure they want to keep the conversation private.

My message to the popular kids, would it hurt you to acknowledge you want to ask me a question or comment on my tweets? I'd really appreciate the open replies.
