Surrounded By Food Yet Starving
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 10:12AM During a severe winter several years ago a goodly number of deer had died of starvation while their stomachs were full of hay. In an honest effort to assist, agencies had supplied the superficial when the substantial was what had been needed. Regrettably they had fed the deer but they had not nourished them. The same can be said for marketing and social media. It seems that everyone is talking about it and have even started twittering, facebooking, having a presence on LinkedIn, etc. but are they getting what they need? The tag line for Nike is “Just Do It!” and it seems for many we have taken this to far. Let’s get smart about our marketing once again. Let’s have a strategic Marketing Plan and follow it. Let’s begin with the end result in mind. I have had some fun lately with http://twinfluence.com/. I was sent a tweet a few months back that said I had an influence of over 12 million in my twitter stream. Wow! I decided to investigate by running it myself and discovered it was now 14 million. So I check other tweep with about the same following as me and that I knew and respected. I was delighted to find I was doing something different than other seeing my influence was on average 5 times greater. My deer were not starving because I had a strategy in mind. Know Me, Like Me, Trust Me. This nourished my twitter stream and helped me build a network of followers who were loyal enough to make my influence what it is today. I’d like to thank all of you who have helped me get to this point. Come here me speak this fall at several event on this very subject.

Nice Post. You hit the nail on the head. First step, get real clear on what your business objective is - then the strategy to accomplish the objective - then the right tools to carry out the strategy - and THEN get up and do it.
